Sri Lanka, officially called Ceylon until 1972, is an island country off the southern tip of India. Despite its small size, it has an ancient history and rich culture. Sri Lanka is mentioned in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana under the name of Lanka, Arab sailors knew this island as Serendib, and the Portuguese who conquered it in 1505 gave it the name Ceylon, which was fixed for almost five centuries. In the 17th century The Portuguese were ousted from the island by the Dutch, and at the beginning of the 19th century, after the capture of Holland by Napoleon, they were replaced by the British. The independence of Ceylon was proclaimed in 1948, but the centuries-old foreign domination did not pass without a trace for the island, reflected in its culture, architecture and art.
