The history of Ireland is an explosive mixture of wild and pristine nature, the harsh temper of the locals and protracted wars. The Vikings, the Celts, the Norman invasion, then the English domination and the British heritage – for centuries determined the architectural appearance of the country. Throughout Ireland, here and there, amazing castles are scattered.
The first of them were erected in the 10th-12th centuries, the last ones date back to the 19th century. Many castles were destroyed due to wars or turned into ruins under the influence of natural forces. Other castles are still privately owned by descendants of ancient Irish families. Some castles have been turned into five-star hotels. Many of them can only be reached with a guided tour.
