Goa is the smallest state of India, located in the western part of the country. Administratively, it is divided into two districts – southern and northern Goa. Despite its small size, there are many different attractions that deserve the attention of tourists. The history of Goa is quite rich and eventful. In the Middle Ages, this place was captured by the Portuguese and became the center of control for their vast colonial possessions – from Mombasa in African Kenya to the island of Taiwan and Macau in China. The famous navigator Vasco da Gama was once the governor of Goa. This territory returned to India only in 1961, after the use of armed force.
Today, both parts of the state, both northern and southern Goa, are the main centers of beach tourism in India. But, besides the magnificent sandy beaches, the warm Arabian Sea and the hot tropical sun, there are a lot of interesting places here – historical, architectural and natural monuments, museums, protected areas. Let’s take a closer look at what to see for a tourist arriving in Goa from the sights in the first place, in order to better feel the whole flavor of these places, learn their history and the life of local residents.
