China is the fourth largest country in the world. It occupies 9,596,961 km² of Asia. This is much larger than the area of the entire mainland of Australia. The capital of China is Beijing, the largest city of the country is Shanghai. Until the end of the twentieth century, several territories of the Celestial Empire were considered colonies. In 1997, Hong Kong (a former British territory) was released from this status, and in 1999, Macau (a former Portuguese colony). Despite geopolitical changes, the regions with the administrative centers of Hong Kong and Macau still have internal borders.
