Turkey is a developed state at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. In terms of area (779,452 km²), the country ranks 36th in the world. Most of the territory of Turkey (97%) is located in Asia Minor, on the Anatolian Peninsula and the Armenian Highlands. The uniqueness of the geographical position of the state lies in the fact that Turkey completely controls the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea through the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.
The length of the country in the latitudinal direction reaches 1600 kilometers. The width of the country from north to south is 600 km. The population of the Republic of Turkey is approaching the mark of 90 million people (at the beginning of 2022). Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul (pop. 14 million) is located in Europe. The capital Ankara is located on the Anatolian Peninsula, connected to Europe by highways and railways. European tourists travel to Turkey for seaside resorts, sightseeing tours to historical sites.
